A serine-threonine-protein kinase which senses damaged MITOCHONDRIA and protects against mitochondrial dysfunction caused by PHYSIOLOGICAL STRESS. It phosphorylates proteins on the OUTER MITOCHONDRIAL MEMBRANE to coordinate quality control mechanisms that remove and replace dysfunctional mitochondrial components. Mutations in the PINK1 gene, which encodes PTEN-induced putative kinase, are associated with PARKINSON DISEASE.
